Sydney Marathon 2026: Sports Massage, Preparation & Recovery

Running one of the world’s most spectacular marathons? Let’s make sure your body is ready.

On Sunday, 30 August 2026, thousands of runners from Australia and around the world will take on the TCS Sydney Marathon.

The 42.195 km course takes runners through some of Sydney’s most iconic locations, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, before finishing at the Sydney Opera House.

For many runners, it’s a race they’ve dreamed about for years.

But preparing for a marathon isn’t only about what happens on race day.

It’s everything you do in the weeks leading up to it, and how you look after your body once you cross the finish line.

As a massage therapist with more than 30 years of experience, I’ve treated thousands of runners preparing for marathons, ultramarathons, triathlons and endurance events.

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is this:

Your training gets you to the start line. Your recovery helps you get there feeling ready.

Preparing Your Body for Sydney Marathon 2026

Your training has brought you this far.

Don’t let tired legs, muscle tightness or poor recovery make the final few weeks harder than they need to be.

As race day gets closer:

Long runs become more demanding.

Training fatigue builds up.

Muscles can start feeling tighter.

Your legs may feel heavier.

And those little niggles you’ve been ignoring can become much more noticeable.

This isn’t the time to suddenly push harder or completely change your routine.

It’s the time to listen to your body and give it the support it needs.

For many runners, a well-timed sports massage before the Sydney Marathon becomes part of that preparation.

Why Sports Massage Matters During Marathon Training

Marathon training places repeated stress on your muscles over many weeks and months.

Sports massage can be used alongside your normal training and recovery routine to help manage the muscle tightness and fatigue that can build up during higher training loads.

Depending on your individual needs, a sports massage may help:

  • Ease tight or overworked muscles
  • Support mobility and comfortable movement
  • Relieve the feeling of heavy, tired legs
  • Help manage muscle tension between training sessions
  • Support your overall recovery routine
  • Help you feel more comfortable heading into race week

Every runner is different, so your treatment should be adapted to where you are in your training and how close you are to race day.

Pre-Marathon Sports Massage: When Should You Book?

Timing matters.

A pre-marathon sports massage should not necessarily be the same treatment you would book during the middle of a heavy training block.

Close to race day, the goal is generally to help your body feel mobile, comfortable and ready rather than leaving your muscles feeling heavily worked.

Your therapist can adjust the pressure and treatment style depending on:

  • How your body is feeling
  • Your training load
  • Any areas of muscle tightness
  • How close you are to the marathon
  • Your previous experience with sports massage

If you regularly include massage in your training routine, it’s worth planning your final treatments in advance rather than trying to squeeze one in at the last minute.

Post-Marathon Massage and Recovery

Crossing the finish line is an incredible achievement.

But your marathon journey doesn’t end there.

After 42.195 kilometres, your body needs time to recover from the demands of the race and the months of training that came before it.

A post-marathon recovery massage can become part of your recovery plan by helping to manage muscle soreness and tension while giving your body some much-needed attention after the event.

Your post-race treatment can be adjusted based on how your body feels following the marathon.

Some runners want light recovery work.

Others may need more targeted treatment later once the initial post-race soreness has settled.

The most important thing is not to treat recovery as an afterthought.

You’ve spent months preparing for the race.

Give your body time to recover from it too.

Travelling to Sydney for the Marathon?

If you’re flying into Sydney for the marathon, we’d love to welcome you to Jackie’s Sports Massage.

Our Sydney CBD clinic has been helping runners, athletes and active professionals move and recover since 1994.

We’re located at:

185 Elizabeth Street
Sydney NSW 2000

For runners staying in or around Sydney CBD, our location makes it easy to organise your treatment around your race-week plans.

Many of our clients travel interstate or internationally to compete in Sydney’s major sporting events.

And one thing we hear often is:

“I wish I’d booked my massage earlier.”

Race week is one of our busiest times of the year.

Appointments can fill quickly, particularly around major running events.

If you’re travelling from overseas or interstate, I strongly recommend organising your treatments before you arrive in Sydney.

One less thing to think about.

One more part of race week already organised.

Why Book Your Sydney Marathon Massage Early?

One of the biggest advantages of organising your Runner’s Pack isn’t just having two treatments ready to use.

It’s being able to plan ahead.

Sydney Marathon week is extremely busy, and appointment availability becomes more limited as race day approaches.

We’ll always do our best to book your treatments as close as possible to your preferred dates, subject to availability.

The earlier you organise your appointments, the better your chance of securing times that work with your travel and race schedule.

If you’re travelling from overseas or interstate, booking before you fly also means you arrive in Sydney with one more part of your race preparation already taken care of.
